The 7 Star company was founded in 1959 in Neasden in North London by Bernard Delaunay. He accidentally invented a square tablet of quick-lighting charcoal. The product was sold only in the UK in the church incense market.

Blackman, Pavie and Ladden Ltd. developed the charcoal from the square block in the concave and convex disc shape in addition now familiar to make it more suitable for burning in turibles.
